Phillies activate Chase Utley
The Phillies have a core contributor back in the fold, as they've activated second baseman Chase Utley from the 15-day disabled list.
The Phillies have activated second baseman Chase Utley from the 15-day disabled list. Utley had been sidelined since May with ribcage soreness. To make room on the active roster for Utley, the Phillies optioned OF/INF Michael Martinez back to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
This season the 34-year-old Utley is batting .272/.339/.475, which is good for an OPS+ of 120 in 44 games. He has also provided the excellent defense that has typified his career. When healthy, he's still among the best second basemen in the game today, but the problem, of course, is staying healthy.
Utley is in the final season of a seven-year, $85-million contract.
