The Phillies have placed Chase Utley on the 15-day DL with a "very mild" Grade 1 oblique strain, the Phillies announced. There is no corresponding intercostal or ribcage injury. The team expects him to return in two-to-four weeks.

Utley, 34, first felt the problem during batting practice on Tuesday. He was scratched from the lineup and has not played since. An MRI revealed the extent of the injury on Thursday. The DL move is retroactive to May 21.

In 44 games this year, Utley has hit .272/.339/.475 (119 OPS+) with seven homers and five steals. Thumb and knee injuries limited him to just 301 of 486 possible games from 2010-12. He is visiting the DL for the fourth time in four years.

Freddy Galvis and Kevin Frandsen figure to split second base duties during Utley's absence. The Phillies will call someone up on Friday to fill the vacated roster spot.
