The Pirates have placed veteran left-hander Wandy Rodriguez on the 15-day disabled list because of a forearm strain. The move is retroactive to June 6. An MRI on Rodriguez's arm showed inflammation but no structural damage.
On the season, the 34-year-old Rodriguez has pitched to a 3.59 ERA (100 ERA+), 1.12 WHIP and 3.83 K/BB ratio.
To replace Rodriguez on the active roster, the Pirates, in a move already planned, called up right-hander Gerrit Cole, one of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball. As already noted in this space, Cole will make his major-league debut on Tuesday against Tim Lincecum and the Giants.
