Reds place Jonathan Broxton on disabled list
Reds setup man Jonathan Broxton lands on the DL with a right elbow flexor mass strain. Pedro Villarreal has been recalled to take his spot on the roster.
Reds setup man Jonathan Broxton has been placed on the 15-day disabled, retroactive to Friday, with a right elbow flexor mass strain, the club announced Saturday. As a corresponding move, right-hander Pedro Villarreal has been recalled from Triple-A Louisville.
Broxton, 28, was used in emergency Thursday against the Cubs in the 14th inning -- despite the availability of closer Aroldis Chapman -- and took the loss. He had been dealing with elbow soreness prior to the outing and had the issue examined upon the Reds' return to Cincinnati.
Broxton has a 4.33 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 20 strikeouts in 27 innings thus far in 2013. The two-time All-Star is in the first year of a three-year, $21 million deal with the Reds. He joins fellow setup man Sean Marshall on the disabled list.
