The Braves may be the leading contenders to swing a trade for Cubs right-hander Jeff Samardzija, reports David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. O'Brien writes that while top Braves prospect Lucas Sims is likely off limits, the team may try to woo the Cubs with a package of less coveted young talents.

As for Samardzija, he's coming off a 2013 season in which he pitched to a 4.34 ERA and 2.74 K/BB ratio in 213 2/3 innings for the Cubs. For his career, Samardzija owns an ERA+ of 97 in 189 games, 66 of which have been starts. As a starter, Samardzija has a career ERA of 4.32 and a K/BB of 2.74. The 28-year-old is arbitration-eligible and slated for free agency after the 2015 season. While the Cubs may have interest in signing Samardzija to a long-term extension, they're also listening to trade proposals.

The Braves are looking for rotation help after the loss of Tim Hudson to the Giants and the health uncertainties surrounding Brandon Beachy
