Back on Aug. 16, the Phillies replaced manager Charlie Manuel with Ryne Sandberg (on an interim basis at the time). Manuel made it clear during the press conference that it wasn't his choice, though the Phillies wouldn't exactly call it a firing, either.

So it seemed that Manuel didn't want to stop working in baseball while the Phillies didn't want to burn any bridges with Manuel.

Thus, the news from Philadelphia Wednesday isn't too shocking, as reports (including Comcast Philadelphia) indicate that Manuel has been hired on as a senior advisor to general manager Ruben Amaro.

Manuel, 70, was the Phillies manager for almost nine seasons, going 780-636 with five NL East titles, one NL pennant and the 2008 World Series championship.
