Wright has a herniated disk in his neck and recently received a cortisone shot. Obviously it didn't take if he's expected to miss a big chunk of time.
The Mets have said the neck injury is not related to the spinal stenosis Wright has been dealing with in recent years and will continue to deal with going forward. He needs regular days off and treatment to manage his back problems.
The back limited Wright, 33, to only 38 regular season games last season. He also played another 14 games in the postseason. This season Wright has played only 37 games, during which he's hit .226/.350/.438 (115 OPS+) with seven home runs.
New York is also without first baseman Lucas Duda, who is out for an extended period of time due to a stress fracture in his back. The team acquired James Loney in a minor trade to replace Duda at first base. They may have to do something similar at third base now.
The Mets have been using Wilmer Flores and Ty Kelly at third base in recent days. Eric Campbell also saw some time at the hot corner before being sent to Triple-A. Matt Reynolds is another option.
So far this season the Mets are 29-23 and three games back of the Nationals in the NL East.
