Report: Tyler Chatwood needs Tommy John surgery
Young Rockies starter Tyler Chatwood needs Tommy John surgery, according to a report.
Add another name to the frustratingly long list of Tommy John victims for the 2014 season, as Rockies starter Tyler Chatwood needs to go under the knife, reports the Denver Post. Obviously, the torn UCL and ensuing surgery will knock Chatwood out for the rest of the season and a good chunk of 2015.
Chatwood, 24, hasn't pitched in the majors since April 29 due to a lingering elbow injury, but it hadn't been determined a torn UCL previously. He was trying to rehab his way back, but a lack of progress reportedly spurred him to get it checked out.
Chatwood was 8-5 with a 3.15 ERA (139 ERA+) last season for the Rockies and appeared on track to help their rotation for years to come.
The Rockies pitching staff this season has more resembled a walking DL. Right now, Chatwood, Eddie Butler, Jhoulys Chacin and Jordan Lyles are on the DL. Brett Anderson has been there, too. Only Jorge De La Rosa has made more than 14 starts. Thirteen pitchers have at least one start for Colorado this season.
