Rockies place Rafael Betancourt on DL due to appendicitis
Rafael Betancourt got some unexpected and bad news Saturday. With him on the DL, Rex Brothers will close and Mitchell Boggs joins the Rockies.
Rockies closer Rafael Betancourt was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with appendicitis, the club announced. As a corresponding move, former Cardinals reliever Mitchell Boggs has been recalled from Double-A Tulsa.
Betancourt, 38, has been an effective closer when healthy this season. He's converted 15 of his 16 save chances, sporting a 3.16 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 24 strikeouts in 25 2/3 innings. He was previously on the DL for most of June with a right groin strain.
Boggs, 29, has spent the entirety of his six-year career with the Cardinals, but he was designated for assignment and then shipped to the Rockies earlier this month. He had an 11.05 ERA and 2.46 WHIP in 18 appearances for the Cardinals this season before being let go. Last season, however, he was very effective with a 2.21 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 73 1/3 innings.
Expect Rex Brothers to take over as closer for Colorado. He has four saves already with a 1.11 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 42 strikeouts in 40 2/3 innings this season. That leaves Matt Belisle for the eighth inning.
Notably, this is the second time this season that appendicitis has affected the Rockies. Jason Heyward had to undergo an emergency appendectomy while the Braves were in town in late April.
