Royals sign lefty Jason Vargas to four-year, $32 million contract
The Royals have moved to shore up the rotation by bringing in free agent lefty Jason Vargas, CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman reports.
Vargas, age 30, spent last season with the Angels and pitched to a 4.02 ERA (94 ERA+), 2.37 K/BB and 1.39 WHIP in 150 innings. For his career, he owns 4.30 ERA and 92 ERA+ across parts of eight major-league seasons. In 2013, he missed significant time because of a blood clot in his shoulder.
The Royals were in need of rotation help given the likely departure of free agent Ervin Santana. Vargas figures to slot in the Kansas City behind ace James Shields and perhaps returning right-hander Jeremy Guthrie, assuming Santana signs elsewhere.
