Spikes of the day: A pair of 1916-25 Spaldings, which would hurt
Imagine these spikes coming in high as you try to turn the double play.
Courtesy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art comes what follows, and what follows is a pair of weapons-grade Spalding baseball (or "base ball") spikes from the hardscrabble 1916-25 period ...
These spikes roughly coincided with the latter and probably crankier half of Ty Cobb's career. I don't know whether he came in with Spaldings high, but whatever he wore, they were probably like what you see above.
I'm thinking it would probably hurt to have your lower extremities tenderized by such spikes. Yes, I'm thinking that would hurt.
