Stat of the Day: Rangers pitching makes no sense
The Rangers are dead last in many pitching categories among AL teams, but they are also leading in shutouts.
This just in: The Texas Rangers have had a terrible season on the mound. It's due in part to a rash of injuries, of course, but the bottom line is the staff has been awful. In looking at the American League team stats, the Rangers are dead last in ERA (by almost a half run, mind you), WHIP, quality starts, batting average allowed, on-base percentage allowed, slugging percentage allowed and several other stats.
So, yeah, it's real bad.
But here's the stat of the day. After shutting out the White Sox Tuesday night, the Rangers now have 15 team shutouts, tops in the AL. Here's the top five:
1. Rangers, 15
2. Blue Jays, 12
2. Rays, 12
4. A's, 10
5. Orioles, 9
Seems contradictory, but it's a nice little nugget that reinforces that anything can happen on any given day.
