The Bobblehead Project: Lloyd McClendon 'steals' first base
Our latest entry into The Bobblehead Project highlights an all-time great manager meltdown.
For the first time since 1992, the Pirates are going back to the postseason. Those 20 seasons between playoff appearances were pretty ugly at times, but also pretty hilarious at others.
Back on June 26, 2001, then-manager Lloyd McClendon had had enough of first base umpire Rick Reed. Reed made two questionable calls in the game, and after the second, McClendon went out to argue. Here's the meltdown that ensued (starts at 0:59):
"Stealing" first base and walking off the field with the bag is an all-time classic. An all-time classic worthy of bobblehead immortality. Here's our latest entry into The Bobblehead Project, Lloyd McClendon walking off the field with first base:
Now that Pirates are going to the postseason and the 20 years of losing are a thing of the past, it would be rather neat to see them poke fun at themselves and have a giveaway like this. No matter how hard it was to sit through the down years, you can't not laugh at McClendon's tirade.
