VIDEO: Red Sox sign Japanese sidearmer Shunsuke Watanabe
The Red Sox have added to the bullpen with a side-armer from Japan who they've signed to a minor-league contract.
On Tuesday, the Red Sox announced the signing of Japanese right-handed reliever Shunsuke Watanabe to a minor-league contract.
Watanabe, age 37, owns a 3.65 ERA and 2.20 K/BB ratio across parts of 13 seasons with the Chiba Lotte Marines of Japan's Pacific League. During part of his time with Chiba Lotte, Watanabe played for Bobby Valentine, who of course managed the Red Sox during the ill-fated 2012 season.
Watanabe is a sidearm hurler, as this video of his delivery (HT: @PeteAbe) proves beyond all doubt ...
