Because they are opening the season in Australia a week before everyone else, the smart money was on a Dodgers or Diamondbacks player hitting the first home run of 2014. Plenty of good candidates too, like Paul Goldschmidt, Adrian Gonzalez, Mark Trumbo and Hanley Ramirez.

So, naturally, the first homer of the new season comes from platoon outfielder Scott Van Slyke, Andy's son:

Opinion: Opposite-field home runs are more aesthetically pleasing tham pulled home runs.

Van Slyke has been the star of the day offensively, swatting a double in the second inning to help setup his team's first run. He had some help from Trumbo's defense on that one.

Courtesy of Hit Tracker Online, here are the first home run hitters of the last five seasons: Rick Ankiel (2013), Dustin Ackley (2012), Torii Hunter (2011), Curtis Granderson (2010) and Brian McCann (2009).
