Indians catching prospect Francisco Mejia has had a stressful week.
Last weekend, Mejia's name surfaced in the Jonathan Lucroy trade talks. Obviously those went for naught, but that didn't end the drama. On Thursday, Mejia stepped to the plate in the ninth inning 0 for 4 on the night -- notable, since his 45-game hitting streak was on the line. By virtue of this article's existence, you know what happened next: Yes, Mejia notched a hit, doubling down the right-field line:
Mejia's double did more than extend his streak -- it helped him make history. His 46-game hitting streak is the longest since the minors reclassified in 1961. In fact, it's actually the longest since 1954, when the appropriately named Roman Mejias recorded a knock in 55 consecutive games. Mejia has a ways to go before he threatens Mejia -- or Joe Wilhoit, whose 69-gamer back in 1919 remains the longest of all-time -- but let's not get too far ahead of ourselves.
Mejia, 20, entered the weekend hitting .344/.375/.517 across two levels. He's ranked no. 4 on MLB.com's Indians prospect list.
