The Andre Ethier trade rumors are short-lived.

"Not happening,'' says a person familiar with the Dodgers' thinking.

There's been a bit of speculation regarding Ethier since the Dodgers haven't ruled out a return by Shane Victorino despite having the All-Star trio of Ethier, Matt Kemp and Carl Crawford in the fold. Kemp and Crawford both had arm surgeries, but there's no word whether either is expected to miss much time next year with their recoveries.

The idea of a possible trade for Ethier was mentioned by ESPN.com on Monday. However, two peeople familiar with the Dodgers' thinking shot it down Tuesday. A trade for Ethier would be a little unusual in that the left-fielder just signed a five-year, $85 million extension with the Dodgers.

The Dodgers certainly don't need to trade Ethier for financial reasons. They added $260 million in commitments with their big trade for Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez and Josh Beckett in August, and seem ready to be aggressive again in the winter.

Ethier hit .284 with 20 home runs and 89 RBI this season.
