Cardinals All-Star catcher Yadier Molina was forced from Wednesday's game against Pittsburgh with a right thumb sprain, the club announced. He will be re-evaluated Thursday, otherwise the Cardinals didn't provide any further information.

Molina injured the thumb on a slide into third base, though it was actually a foot-first slide, so we can't blame the scapegoat that is the headfirst slide here.

Tony Cruz replaced Molina behind the plate and would be the top beneficiary of playing time if Molina were to miss any additional time.

Molina, 31, is hitting .287/.341/.409 with 16 doubles, seven homers, 30 RBI and his standard excellence behind the plate this season. He's slated to start the All-Star Game for the NL Tuesday in Minnesota.
