Yankees, Marlins inviting everyone -- maybe even you -- to camp

First, this tweet from MLB.com's Joe Frisaro ...

Yes: 74 players in camp. That means the Marlins have summoned almost as many non-roster invitees to spring training as they have players rostered on the 40-man. That's ... a lot.

Anyhow, that got our own Danny Knobler thinking, and he ran the numbers for every team. Turns out the Marlins will have merely the second-most overflowing camp. The Yankees, you see, have invited 84 players to spring training. Once more, with italics: The Yankees have invited 84 players to spring training.

While most teams will hand out between 15 and 25 NRI's, the Yankees this year will check in at around, oh, 44 NRIs. High-level business strategists refer to this as the "let God sort 'em out" approach to problem solving.

It's one thing for the Yankees to indulge in this sort of thing, but, as Knobler points out, it's something else for the Marlins to task a rookie manager (Mike Redmond) with sorting through seventy-dang-four warm bodies.

In any event, perhaps the Marlins and Yankees will get together for some split-split-split squad action this spring.
