Yasiel Puig fined for showing up late
Yasiel Puig showed up late and was fined Tuesday in Miami. He's also out of the lineup, but that's due to his recent struggles, not being late.
Rookie sensation Yasiel Puig has been fined an undisclosed amount for getting to Tuesday's game late, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly told reporters (Dodgers.com). In what is actually unrelated news, Puig is getting the night off. He has not been benched for any punishment-related reasons, Mattingly made sure to tell reporters. It's a night off in light of his recent struggles (Dodgers.com).
In his last nine games, Puig is hitting .171/.231/.257 and he's been retired in each of his last 11 plate appearances.
Given that Puig also had a bit of a PR issue Monday and is facing increased media attention in Miami -- the closest MLB city to his native country, Cuba, Tuesday seems like the perfect time to give him a night off to clear his head.
The 22-year-old outfielder is hitting .351/.412/.556 with 16 doubles, two triples, 11 homers, 27 RBI, 47 runs and seven stolen bases in 289 plate appearances this season. The Dodgers are 46-18 in games he has started.
