DUNEDIN, Fla. -- You know that story about Jeffrey Loria telling Jose Reyes to buy a house in Miami just days before the Marlins traded him to the Blue Jays?
Not good. But at least Reyes never bought that house.
Mark Buehrle did.
"I bought as soon as I signed," Buehrle said Sunday. "Dropped a lot of money into it."
When Buehrle signed his four-year, $58 million contract with the Marlins in December 2011, he figured he was signing on for the rest of his career.
"I thought that was going to be it," Buehrle said. "We were going to live there, and hold onto it for a retirement home. We painted the inside and outside of it, and had a lot of landscaping done."
Now he's not sure what to do with it.
Buehrle isn't asking for people to feel sorry for him, but you can understand why players like Reyes and him aren't exactly fond of Marlins ownership. While the Marlins had a policy against no-trade clauses, the players felt that promises had been made and then broken.
Reyes knows it could have been worse. He could have bought a house, too.
