Dodgers starting pitcher Zack Greinke has been complaining of elbow discomfort for more than a week. On Monday, he was scratched from his scheduled Cactus League start so he could fly to Los Angeles to have his injured elbow examined by Dr. Neal ElAttrache (MLB.com).
According to Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Greinke has already had an MRI that came back "clean." But it bears repeating that the elbow discomfort hasn't gone away and Greinke will be examined again Monday.
Greinke suffered discomfort Sunday when trying to play catch. And while the Dodgers said Greinke has had elbow issues in the past and that the current condition is not serious, they decided to ship Greinke back to LA for an exam "out of an abundance of caution."
Greinke, 29, signed a six-year, $147 million deal this past offseason with the Dodgers. He was 15-5 with a 3.48 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 200 strikeouts in 212 1/3 innings last season for the Brewers and Angels. He's only managed two starts this spring, compared to four starts by Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw.
