  • Reds' Christian Encarnacion-Strand: Sits out due to illness

Encarnacion-Strand did not play Wednesday due to illness, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Spencer Steer replaced him at first base.

It had earlier been reported that Encarnacion-Strand was merely resting -- his first day off of the season -- but Cincinnati manager David Bell confirmed the illness. Bell didn't provide specifics on the symptoms but indicated Encarnacion-Strand wasn't feeling well in advance of the three-game series in Seattle.

Encarnacion-Strand is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game in Seattle.

He'll be riding pine for the first time this season while Spencer Steer replaces him at first base and Stuart Fairchild steps in as the Reds' No. 3 hitter. Before an 0-for-4 showing in Tuesday's 3-1 loss, Encarnacion-Strand had delivered exactly two hits in four of his preceding six starts.

  • Reds' Christian Encarnacion-Strand: Homers, drives in four

Encarnacion-Strand went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and four RBI during Sunday's win over the White Sox.

Encarnacion-Strand's two-run shot came in the third inning and opened the scoring for the Reds. He later added a two-run single to close out a four-run seventh. The homer marked Encarnacion-Strand's second of the season and first since March 31 as he broke an eight-game string without an extra-base hit. He's hitting a paltry .185 on the season and has tallied just one walk, though he's accumulated six hits among three multi-hit games over his last five as he's showing signs of breaking out of his early-season funk.

  • Reds' Christian Encarnacion-Strand: Logs two hits in loss

Encarnacion-Strand went 2-for-5 with two runs scored in Tuesday's 9-5 loss to the Brewers.

Encarnacion-Strand is fighting a slump and entered the night with a .136 average after a 1-for-20 stretch. Cincinnati needs better from the player that bats third in the order. The silver lining is that Encarnacion-Strand's underlying numbers indicate some bad luck (.206 BABIP). His average stands at .163 following Tuesday's two-hit night, but Statcast has him at an expected average of .245.
