Surprise: Villanueva starts, not Dillard: From The Sports Xchange: Manager Ken Macha seemed surprised reporters were surprised when he named Carlos Villanueva as his starter for the game Tuesday night against Washington. Macha said Villanueva is the best option to start against the Nationals even though he has struggled in relief for several weeks, resulting in a 6.18 ERA in 43 relief outings. Macha also had complained about short-inning outings from starters yet admitted he will get one from Villanueva, who has not pitched more than three innings this season. Macha noted that Villanueva has previous starting experience, which is true. Villanueva went 2-5 with a 6.43 ERA in nine starts at the start of last season, resulting in his move to the bullpen, where he compiled a 2.12 ERA in 38 relief outings. Many assumed Tim Dillard would get the start after being summoned from Triple-A Nashville, where he was 10-4 with a 3.66 ERA.

Dillard pitched an eight-inning one-hitter in his last outing with Nashville, but Macha said his secondary pitches might not be enough to start in the major leagues and said he would back up Villanueva on Tuesday. Macha said he waited until Monday to announce Villanueva as the starter because he could have been used out of the bullpen over the weekend for extended innings against the Braves. Instead, Villanueva pitched one inning of relief Friday, surrendering the decisive home run to Chipper Jones in a 9-4 loss. Consider Villanueva a temporary starter, assuming the Brewers add someone before the trade deadline. Dillard likely will remain in long relief, where he will be a candidate for relief victories with the offensively potent but starting pitching-poor Brewers.
