Nationals' Yunel Escobar batting leadoff in Game 1 of DH
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Nationals third baseman Yunel Escobar is batting leadoff in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader.

Regular leadoff man Denard Span is missing Game 1 with a knee injury, leaving Escobar to fill the role for the seventh time this season. He's 4 for 5 with a walk and a home run when leading off the first inning for the Nationals and has hit .313/.371/.391 with two home runs and 14 RBI in 179 at-bats.

The Nationals are heavy favorites (-210) for Game 1 with Jordan Zimmermann on the mound, per VegasInsider.com.

Nationals 3B Yunel Escobar ejected
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer

Nationals third baseman Yunel Escobar was tossed from Saturday's game against the Reds in the seventh inning for arguing balls and strikes, per MLB.com.

Escobar, who had two hits earlier in the game, struck out looking in the seventh and drew a quick hook from home plate umpire Andy Fletcher, apparently for disagreeing with Fletcher's strike zone.

Escobar left the game hitting 2-for-4 and his average is at .318 on the season.

Nationals 3B Yunel Escobar a steady presence at the plate
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Yunel Escobar continues to be an offensive force for the Nationals. On Tuesday, Escobar went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored as the Nationals walked off on the Yankees 8-6. Escobar actually scored the game-winning run on Ryan Zimmerman's two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Escobar is on fire at the plate. Over his last 10 games, he's hitting .405 (17 for 42) with a double and five RBI, and he's riding a modest four-game hitting streak.

With just two home runs on the season, Escobar hasn't provided the type of power usually seen from a third baseman. Regardless, he's been a bit of a revelation in the Nation's Capital, and is entrenched at the hot corner for manager Matt Williams.

"I just like the way we're going about it," Williams said, per MLB.com. "Their energy, they are playing well, they feel like they are in the game, they battle back. So, I like that."

Nationals' Yunel Escobar goes 5 for 5 for second time in a week
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com

Nationals infielder Yunel Escobar went 5 for 5 in Monday night's 11-1 win over the Diamondbacks.

All five of Escobar's hits were single, with one of them driving in a run. This is the second time Escobar has gone 5 for 5 in the past week. He also pulled this feat off on May 4 against the Marlins.

"It was nice to see him get back in there today," manager Matt Williams said. "He feels good. That's all I care about. Regardless of how many hits he gets, he feels good."

The outing has Escobar batting .410 this month. He's now riding a streak of five games in a row with at least one hit.

For the season, Escobar's slash line is now .342/.388/.423.

Nationals CF Dernard Span, 3B Yunel Escobar in Monday's lineup
by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer

Center fielder Denard Span will return to the Nationals' starting lineup Monday while Yunel Escobar is also in the lineup after exiting Sunday's game early.

Span sat out Sunday's win against the Braves and Escobar left after three innings with a stomach bug.

Span began the season on the disabled list (core muscle) and since his April 19th return has played in 20 of the Nats' 25 games, hitting .284 with seven doubles.
