Steve Tolleson, Justin Smoak make Blue Jays' Opening Day roster

Even though he lost out to Devon Travis for the starting job at second base, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons announced Tuesday infielder Steve Tolleson has earned a spot on the roster.

Gibbons also announced Justin Smoak will be on the Opening Day roster.

Tolleson hit .258 with two doubles, three home runs and six RBI in 16 spring games, while Smoak hit .196 with one double, four home runs and eight RBI in 20 spring games.

Blue Jays tab prospect Devon Travis as starting second baseman

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons announced Tuesday prospect Devon Travis has won the starting job at second base, beating out Ryan Goins and Steve Tolleson.

Travis has had a pretty outstanding spring at the plate. He is batting .352 (19 for 54) with six doubles, six RBI, four walks and five runs in 23 games.

Travis, who was acquired in a November trade with Detroit, is considered Toronto's fifth-best prospect by Baseball America. Travis has a career .323/.388/.487/.876 slash line over three seasons in the minors.

CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman first reported March 25 that Travis would win the starting job at second base.

X-rays on the injured hand of Blue Jays second baseman Steve Tolleson have come back clean, Sportsnet reports.

Tolleson was hit by a pitch on his right hand in Saturday's spring game, but it appears he's escaped serious injury. He has hit .258/.324/.613 with three home runs in 31 spring at-bats.

While the Blue Jays have yet to make an announcement, Devon Travis will win the starting job at second base over Ryan Goins and Steve Tolleson, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

Travis, who was acquired in a November trade with Detroit, is doing well offensively this spring. He is batting .400 (16 for 40) with six doubles, six RBI, three walks, four runs and five strikeouts in 16 spring games.

He is considered Toronto's fifth-best prospect by Baseball America. Travis has a career .323/.388/.487/.876 slash line over three seasons in the minors.
