Headley on working alongside A-Rod: 'It's business as usual'
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Tuesday was the first time Yankees third baseman Chase Headley got to work alongside embattled slugger Alex Rodriguez.

“As a player, you experience different things in your career,” Headley said, per The Journal News. “And I’ve been around long enough that there’s been different sets of circumstances that I’ve dealt with, and this just another one. As far as a teammate, I expect him to be great. I’ve heard great things from other guys, and every interaction that I’ve had with him has been positive. Hopefully here in a few days everything will calm down and we’ll start talking about baseball, but you know, obviously you expect to answer the questions about him. But from my point of view, it’s business as usual.”

As far as their roles on the team, Headley is still expected to be the starting third baseman and Rodriguez will get most of his playing time at DH.

“For me to be here, I feel like (playing third base) is what made sense,” Headley said. “We established that early on (in offseason contact negotiations). There’s a lot of things that can happen over the course of a season. Obviously the more bodies that you have that can fill positions (is) great, but if I thought I was coming here to be a first baseman or a left fielder or whatever, I wouldn’t have came back. That wouldn’t have made sense for me or the Yankees.”

Headley: A-Rod reached out in offseason, both care about winning
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Yankees third baseman Chase Headley said embattled slugger Alex Rodriguez reached out to him in mid-December after Headley signed a four-year, $52 million contract.

Rodriguez, who sat out in 2014 due to a season-long suspension, is hoping to win back the starting job at third base, but he is expected to see most of his at-bats at DH.

"We didn't talk about that," Headley said Monday about Rodriguez wanting to start at third, per the Associated Press. "I think we both care about winning. That's the most important thing and that's what we talked about. That (other) stuff will sort itself out. I'm not going to concern myself with that. I'm going to come out and try to do the best I can to do my job, and however that shakes out it will shake out."

Yankees' Steinbrenner: 'We're not going to be afraid to spend money'
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Yankees principal owner Hal Steinbrenner indicated Wednesday more offseason moves for New York could be coming, despite general manager Brian Cashman being active this offseason, according to MLB.com. The Yankees have already re-signed third baseman Chase Headley and infielder Stephen Drew, signed reliever Andrew Miller and traded for shortstop Didi Gregorius.

"It's not over until it's over. We still have a full month before spring training," Steinbrenner said. "We're always going to continue to improve. I'm not putting a cap on it. We've certainly filled some holes that we had. We'll keep going for the next few weeks."

Steinbrenner said he wants to get New York back to the postseason while trying to keep the the payroll in the same range, but left the door open to perhaps target one of the top free-agent players still available. Starting pitchers Max Scherzer and James Shields are two of the top names still on the free-agent market.

"[But] having said that, we're still the New York Yankees, all you guys know that," Steinbrenner said. "We know what the fans expect. We know what the town expects. We're not going to be afraid to spend money."
