40 Alberto Gonzalez, SS

The Yankees have sent infielder Alberto Gonzalez to Triple-A. 

Gonzalez was designated for assignment May 18, and will report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Gonzalez started three games for the team after being acquired from the Cubs earlier this season. Though 32 at-bats, Gonzalez is hitting .250/.286/.375. 

The Yankees designated Alberto Gonzalez for assignment to make room on the roster for the addition of Reid Brignac, MLB.com reports. 

New York manager Joe Girardi decided to ask shortstop Alberto Gonzalez to pitch the final out of a 12-2 loss to the Mariners Wednesday night, MLB.com reports.

"A shortstop usually has pretty good command of where he's throwing the baseball all the time," manager Joe Girardi said of choosing Gonzalez. "So I just figured he's the guy."

The Yankees wanted to save their tired bullpen in a blowout loss.

Gonzalez went 1 for 3 at the plate with a single and is batting .333 in three games since coming over from the Cubs.

The Yankees recalled infielder Alberto Gonzalez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Sunday after placing Eduardo Nunez (rib) on the disabled list. Gonzalez, who was acquired from the Cubs last week, hit .303 (10 for 33) in 10 games for Chicago's Triple-A affiliate.
