Nationals' Max Scherzer: Will avoid throwing fastballs Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Scherzer (finger) will throw only secondary pitches during his Saturday mound session because he still can't grip his fastball without feeling pain, Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reports.

As Janes said in her tweet, that fact "makes it slightly less encouraging" that he's throwing off a mound. The stress fracture that will help keep Scherzer out of the World Baseball Classic is suddenly making his prospective fantasy owners nervous. Still, Janes said Scherzer's "arm will be strong and ready when the pain goes away," meaning he probably won't need much actual work in spring games to get ready for the regular season. Don't rule out the possibility of his recovery timetable dipping into April, though. There's reason to knock Scherzer down draft boards a bit, but his prognosis has time to improve.

Nationals' Max Scherzer: Set to throw off mound Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Scherzer (finger) is scheduled to throw off a mound for the first time this spring on Saturday, Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post reports.

This is the next step in his return, as Scherzer was able to play catch with his normal grip for the first time on Monday, reporting only slight soreness afterwards. The Nats are in no hurry to rush their ace back, but if all goes well Saturday, they should be able to ramp up his activity level and start preparing him for Opening Day. It is definitely a situation to monitor closely, as the bullpen session Saturday will likely give a better idea as to whether or not the 32-year-old will be ready for the start of the season.

Nationals' Max Scherzer: Uses normal grip Monday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Scherzer was able to play catch while using his normal fastball grip Monday, but still felt some soreness in the knuckle at the base of his right ring finger, The Washington Post reports.

To this point in the spring, Scherzer had been forced to grip the ball with only three fingers while throwing from flat ground, so this is progress. The Nats won't put him on a mound until he's able to throw without soreness, though, so at this point there's no timetable for when he'll be able to ramp up his activity level and start getting ready for Opening Day in earnest. Fortunately for Scherzer, the extended spring training schedule created to accommodate the WBC gives him plenty of time to get up to speed before the regular season begins, but if he is delayed too long, his workload in April could be restricted.

Nationals' Max Scherzer: Throwing on flat ground
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Scherzer (knuckle) threw on flat ground Friday after being able to play catch Thursday, Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reports.

He continues to work out now that the stress fracture in the knuckle of his right finger has healed. Scherzer is typically one of the first starting pitchers drafted in early fantasy mocks, but this condition is worth watching as close to draft day as possible. As long as he isn't set to miss much or any time after Opening Day, he'll remain one of the best starting pitchers to own, though any indication of a delay may nip his value slightly.

Nationals' Max Scherzer: May not be ready for Opening Day
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Scherzer (knuckle) would not commit to being ready for Opening Day, the Washington Post's Chelsea Janes reports.

The stress fracture in the knuckle of his right ring finger is healed, but he is still experiencing symptoms. Scherzer played catch Thursday and has already been throwing tennis and lacrosse balls this winter, but only moved up to throwing a baseball this week. Cautious owners may want to downgrade the Nationals' ace ever so slightly until we get a more positive report on his status for the start of the season.
