Nationals' Max Scherzer: One rough inning leads to fourth loss.
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Scherzer allowed five runs on three hits, walking four and striking out six over seven innings of a 6-2 loss to the Cardinals on Friday night.

Scherzer (5-4) was literally untouchable for six of the seven innings he pitched in this one. However, after retiring the first hitter in the third inning, he allowed a single, a walk, and a single to load the bases. Matt Holliday then walked to drive in the first run, then Steve Piscotty drilled a grand slam to put Scherzer and the Nats in a 5-0 hole. It would be the only runs and only hits he would give up in the contest, but it would be enough. He can certainly be dominant, but his 4.05 ERA is a reminder that he can also be a bit inconsistent and prone to serving up long balls, even within a game. He'll face off against the Phillies on the road in his next outing.

Nationals' Max Scherzer: Pitches eight strong innings in Sunday's win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Scherzer (5-3) allowed two runs on six hits over eight innings while striking out eight in Sunday's win over the Marlins.

He was sharp all day, throwing 76 of 103 pitches for strikes and only making one real mistake which resulted in a two-run home run by Justin Bour. Scherzer's 1.90 HR/9 rate remains unsightly and is the primary driver behind his 3.80 ERA, but otherwise his numbers are exactly what everyone expected coming into the season. His next start will come at home Friday against the Cardinals.

Nationals' Max Scherzer: Strikes out 10 but loses to Mets
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Scherzer (4-3) struck out 10 and allowed just two runs on three hits and three walks but still took the loss in Tuesday's game against the Mets.

Scherzer was sharp but outdueled by Noah Syndergaard, who tossed seven shutout innings and matched Scherzer's 10 strikeouts. He was nasty, as he induced 17 swinging strikes, but he got tagged for a pair of solo home runs by Curtis Granderson and Michael Conforto that wound up being the difference in the game. Even though Scherzer has allowed four home runs -- all solo blasts -- in his past two starts, it's hard to argue with the overall results -- four earned runs and a whopping 30 strikeouts in 15.1 innings.

Nationals' Max Scherzer: Ties MLB record with 20 whiffs in complete-game win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Max Scherzer (4-2) struck out 20 -- tying the MLB record -- en route to a complete-game victory over the Tigers on Wednesday. He allowed two runs on six hits and didn't walk a batter.

Both runs came on solo homers, while former National Jordan Zimmermann limited his old mates to three runs, so this game came down to the wire despite Scherzer joining Roger Clemens (twice), Kerry Wood and Randy Johnson as the only pitchers in history to strike out 20 batters in nine innings. Scherzer had yet to hit double-digit strikeouts in a start as part of his rough opening to 2016, and it's concerning that he's given up a whopping 11 homers over 52 innings. Still, he's been one of the game's best pitchers over the last three seasons and should pull his still-unfavorable ratios back to respectability soon.

Nationals' Max Scherzer: Blasted as Cubs go deep four times
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Max Scherzer allowed seven runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out seven over five innings of an 8-6 loss to the Cubs on Friday afternoon.

Scherzer (3-2) served up four home runs, and struggled with command throughout. It's been a rough start to the season, but he had felt a small adjustment in his mechanics might solve the problems. Unfortunately, this appears to have been a step backwards as he will carry an unsightly 4.60 ERA into his next start against the Tigers. It's way too early to panic, but he needs much better to justify his owner's investments on draft day.
