Rockies' Kendrick to start Opening Day, De La Rosa starting home opener
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Rockies manager Walt Weiss announced Thursday starting pitcher Kyle Kendrick will start Opening Day (April 6) against the Brewers. He also announced Jorge De La Rosa will start the home opener on April 10 against the Cubs.

"[Kendrick is] very professional, very efficient on the mound. He's a veteran guy that's pitched in big games," Weiss said. "We always feel good when [De La Rosa is] on the mound, especially when he's on the mound at our place."

Rockies call upon Kyle Kendrick to start Opening Day
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Rockies pitcher Kyle Kendrick has been chosen to start Opening Day and will face the Brewers in Milwaukee on April 6, MLB.com reports.

"Kyle has been everything we thought he was," manager Walt Weiss said. "He's very professional, very efficient on the mound. He's a veteran guy that's pitched in big games."

Kendrick, who threw a 30-pitch simulated game Wednesday to put him in line for the regular-season opener, has surrendered three earned runs on 10 hits and one walk in seven innings while striking out five in three outings this spring.

The news opens Jorge De La Rosa to take the mound for the team's home opener. De La Rosa, the clear leader of the pitching staff and the top pitcher in Coors Field history, has dealt with groin issues this spring.

"He kills all the theories about pitching there," Weiss said. "It is appropriate and we always feel good when he's on the mound, especially when he's on the mound at our place."

Kyle Kendrick not afraid of the challenges of pitching at Coors Field
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Rockies starting pitcher Kyle Kendrick is going from one hitter's park to another, moving from Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park to Colorado's Coors Field. His career numbers at both parks aren't great, as he has a 4.39 ERA and 1.36 WHIP at Citizens and a 5.26 ERA and 1.46 WHIP at Coors.

Regardless of his past struggles in hitter's park, Kendrick is not worried about what lies ahead at one of the top offensive parks in the majors.

"I'm not going to strike out 20 guys a game, although I'll get my share," Kendrick said, per MLB.com. "I'm going to pitch to contact, get early outs and pitch deep in the game. In that ballpark [Coors Field], with that offense, if you give up three or four runs in seven innings, a lot of times you're going win the game. I wasn't afraid of signing."

Rockies manager Walt Weiss also outlined his expectations for the veteran right-handed hurler.

"We are looking for guys that compete well and are out to win games, period, not get caught up in their ERA or some other statistics," Weiss said. "Kyle fits that bill."
