Mark Mulder still hopeful of an MLB comeback
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

The Angels released pitcher Mark Mulder Tuesday, which was just a transactional formality given his season-ending Achilles injury. However, Mulder is still hopeful to one day pitch in the majors again, per MLB.com.

"Barring a setback, or me not being able to pitch with my ankle for some reason, I don't see why not," Mulder said in a phone conversation. "My arm's still going to be the same next year."

Report: Mark Mulder suffers ruptured Achilles
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Angels pitcher Mark Mulder's comeback could be over before it even began. The Los Angeles Times reports that Mulder suffered a ruptured left Achilles while doing agility drills on Saturday, an injury that could cost him the entire season.

The Angels will reveal the results of his MRI exam on Sunday. Mulder has not pitched in the majors since 2008.

Mark Mulder tweaks ankle; bullpen session cancelled
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Angels pitcher Mark Mulder hurt his ankle during warmups Saturday and has scrapped his bullpen session, per the Orange County Register. He left the field to have his ankle examined.

Mulder is trying to make an unlikely comeback. He has not pitched in the major leagues since 2008. An ankle injury that keeps him off the field for any length of time must be considered a major setback.

Altered mechanics led to Mark Mulder's return
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

Angels pitcher Mark Mulder is hoping new mechanics will help him return to the majors, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Shoulder surgeries ruined Mulder's first go in the majors, causing him to leave the game at age-30. Mulder said he never expected to return to the majors until he saw Dodgers pitcher Paco Rodriguez throw in the postseason. Rodriguez separates his hands at the top of his delivery, which intrigued Mulder.

Mulder mimicked the motion, and discovered it allowed him to throw without pain. He reportedly hit 89 mph to 92 mph in a tryout in front of three scouts, who were impressed with his new mechanics. "What amazed me was how loose and free and easy his arm was," special assistant to the general manager Tim Huff said. "I pulled some video of him from St. Louis and you could tell he was fighting it on every pitch, trying to find some kind of arm slot that wasn't going to cause pain."

Mulder is hoping to win a rotation spot during the spring. Despite long odds, he likes his chances. "I'm sure a lot of people think I have no chance, but I know the way the ball is coming out of my hand, and I like it," Mulder said.

Angels consider adding SP, but content with rotation alignment
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said Los Angeles remains interested in free agent pitcher Matt Garza, according to the Los Angeles Times.

However, Dipoto added he would also be satisfied going into spring training with a rotation of Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson, Garrett Richards, Hector Santiago and Tyler Skaggs, with Mark Mulder, Joe Blanton and Wade LeBlanc also in the mix competing for a spot in the rotation.

"We do like our pitching staff and the depth we’ve been able to come up with," Dipoto said. "We know there is some uncertainty with a handful of young pitchers as they learn the league, but we believe in their ability.

"The year Hector had last year was pretty good. The second-half surge we saw from Richards was very encouraging. Skaggs is a 22-year-old  who has done what he can in the minor leagues, and we believe he’s ready for opportunity."
