Ernesto Frieri pegged with the loss Tuesday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

Pirates reliever Ernesto Frieri was pegged with the loss Tuesday against the Cardinals.

Frieri entered a 4-4 game in the bottom of the ninth inning. After getting two quick outs, Frieri allowed a walkoff solo home run to Kolten Wong to end the game. Frieri did manage to record one strikeout during the appearance. The loss drops him to 1-4 on the year.

Ernesto Frieri earns first win as Pirate Tuesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Pirates pitcher Ernesto Frieri earned his first win with his new team Tuesday, giving up three hits but pitching a scoreless ninth inning and striking out one in his team's 3-2 victory over the Diamondbacks.

Frieri (1-3) gave up two singles before striking out the opposing pitcher, and though he gave up another single to the following batter, the lead runner was thrown out at home to preserve the tie. Frieri then retired the following batter to escape the inning with no damage done before the offense pulled off a come-from-behind win in the bottom of the ninth. Frieri owns a 6.00 ERA and 39:9 K:BB ratio in 33 innings between the Pirates and Angels.

Angels swap out one shaky closer for another
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

The more manager Mike Scioscia insisted he didn't want Joe Smith confined to closing, the more apparent it became the Angels had to make a trade. So they finally did Friday, swapping out perpetual headache Ernesto Frieri for Jason Grilli.

The problem is Grilli hasn't been so reliable himself. He may have been an All-Star in the role last year and was nothing short of lights-out before hurting his forearm midseason. But since then, in 31 appearances between this year and last, he has a 4.82 ERA and 1.68 WHIP.

In fact, the Pirates recently removed him from the closer role, replacing him with Mark Melancon.

Now, maybe the Angels thought that move was premature. Maybe they believe they can resuscitate Grilli somehow. He still has good stuff, so I wouldn't put it past them. But while Frieri is obviously a non-factor in mixed leagues now, I wouldn't be so quick to drop Smith in leagues where saves are scarce.

Angels, Pirates swap Ernesto Frieri for Jason Grilli
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com

The Angels and Pirates swapped deposed closers Friday, with Ernesto Frieri heading to Pittsburgh in exchange for Jason Grilli.

Both pitchers began the season as their team's respective closers, but were replaced due to struggles. Frieri has a 6.39 ERA in 31 innings, with 11 saves in 14 chances, while Grillie has a 4.87 ERA in 20 1/3 innings, with 11 saves in 15 tries. At this point, neither pitcher's role for his new team has been defined.

Manager: Angels are better team with Ernesto Frieri closing
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Mike Scioscia removed Ernesto Frieri from the closer job in favor of Joe Smith, but it was done kicking and screaming, at least figuratively. Scioscia vastly prefers Frieri in that role for the Angels.

"Our bullpen right now, with this group, works better if Ernie can get back to being the close that we know he can be," Scioscia told the Orange County Register. "If he gets back to that consistency, our bullpen gets more depth and let us do things earlier, in the seventh."

Scioscia has expressed his belief that Smith has greater flexibility, such as the ability to pitch more than one inning. Despite his sidearming style, he is adept at getting both right-handed and left-handed batters out and inducing double plays. He is their most effective reliever entering with runners on base.

Frieri, however, has been terrible. He has given up eight home runs in 30 2/3 innings and eight earned runs in his last 6 1/3 innings pitched.
