Cubs infielder Darwin Barney went 4 for 4 Tuesday against the Pirates, raising his batting average above .200 for the first time since May 1.

Barney had three singles and a double in the game, while driving in one run and scoring two. The Cubs would go on to lose the game, 5-4, despite his efforts. He is now batting .223 on the season, with a .695 on-base plus slugging percentage. 

Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney tied a season-high with three hits Tuesday against the Rockies. He had one double, one home run and two RBI.

After beginning May without a hit in seven games (0 for 20), Barney has hit safely in four of his last five games. He's batting .333 (6 for 18) with one home run, two RBI, three runs and three doubles in that span.

Despite Darwin Barney's recent struggles, Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said that the second basemen is in no danger of being demoted to the minors, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Hoyer added that he will have "quite a bit" of patience with Barney, who entered Saturday's contest against the Nationals with just one hit over his last 24 at-bats.

Barney finished with 1 for 3 with a walk and run scored in Saturday's 8-2 win over Washington.

"He's earned a lot of playing time," Hoyer said.
