Cubs have no plans to shut down Jake Arrieta
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Cubs starting pitcher Jake Arrieta has logged 117 1/3 innings through 19 starts, which puts him two innings shy of matching his career-high at the major-league level. Though, Arrieta has surpassed 150 innings in the minors and combined to pass 170 innings in the majors and minors in 2010.

When asked if Arrieta was faced with an innings limit Monday, Cubs coach Rick Renteria was adamant about the team's ace finishing out the season.

"There’s no plan of shutting Jake down," Renteria said, per The Chicago Tribune. "We monitor everybody. I’ll be honest. I don’t know how that was construed as shutting him down.

"We’re not shutting down. We’re not looking to shut him down. We haven’t talked about shutting him down. I monitor everyone’s pitch counts. That’s just part of it."

Jake Arrieta has no win to show for seven scoreless innings
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Cubs starting pitcher Jake Arrieta tossed two-hit baseball over seven scoreless innings Sunday against the Mets and pitched well enough for the victory. But the bullpen could not hold a one-run lead after Arrieta left, costing him a win.

Arrieta allowed a single to Lucas Duda leading off the second inning and a single to Ruben Tejada leading off the third. He also walked two batters and struck out nine, while lowering his ERA to 2.61.

Arrieta is winless in his last three starts (0-2), but he's allowed a total of two earned runs in his last two starts. He's slated to be back on the hill Friday against the Orioles.

Cubs push back pitchers a day
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

The Cubs will call up Dan Straily for Saturday's start, pushing back their pitchers a day.

That means Jake Arrieta will move to Sunday, and Kyle Hendricks will throw Monday. It's just a spot start for Straily, so the team's rotation should return to normal following Saturday's game.

Jake Arrieta takes loss in quality start vs. Brewers Monday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta was saddled with a loss Monday, giving up just two earned runs on five hits and one walk in 7 1/3 innings and striking out four in his team's 3-1 defeat against the Brewers.

Arrieta (6-4) was hammered to the tune of nine runs in his last start, but he got back on track Monday despite the loss. He allowed a second-inning solo home run before giving up the decisive run on a seventh-inning double. Arrieta has delivered quality starts in 11 of his last 12 turns, and he owns a 2.77 ERA and 113:29 K:BB ratio in 110 1/3 innings. He's scheduled to face the Mets Saturday.

Jake Arrieta's rocky start no big deal
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

After rising from obscurity to become a Fantasy mainstay thanks to a 1.72 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 10.3 strikeouts per nine innings in his previous 10 starts, Cubs starting pitcher Jake Arrieta fell flat on his face Wednesday at Colorado, allowing nine earned runs on 13 hits in five innings.

And while it's hardly uncommon for an ace-caliber pitcher to struggle at Coors Field, that's of little consolation to Fantasy owners when it happens to one of theirs -- especially one who, again, rose from obscurity (which would presumably increase his chances of returning there).

But Arrieta strikes me as a pitcher who's especially susceptible to the Coors effect just because he relies so much on breaking balls. Granted, throwing his slider and curveball a combined 50 percent of the time (or close to it) has been a big reason for his success this season, but breaking balls don't break the same way a mile above sea level. He basically said as much after the game:

"They took advantage of some kind of breaking, spinning stuff over the middle of the plate, just stuff that didn't have enough bite to it."

Case closed, right?
