Red Sox closer Koji Uehara blows save, earns loss
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Red Sox closer Koji Uehara had the chance to be the hero on Sunday. Instead, he was the goat in Boston's 4-3 loss to the Rangers. Uehara came on in the ninth with Boston ahead 3-2 and in a save opportunity.

After a fielding error put the leadoff man on first, he was sacrificed to second and reached third on a Shin-Soo Choo ground out. Then, Uehara intentionally walked Prince Fielder to get to Josh Hamilton. Uehara served up a 1-1 pitch over the plate and Hamilton sent it to the gap, scoring both runners and giving Texas the win.

"We'll take the chance of a guy coming off the bench versus a guy that's in the game and in the rhythm of the game probably more times than not, especially a guy as hot as Prince has been and what he's meant to that offense all year," manager John Farrell said to MLB.com

It was Uehara's second blown save of the season and moves him to 2-2 on the year with a 1.69 ERA in 16 innings.

Red Sox P Matt Barnes adjusting to life in the bullpen
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Despite the fact that Red Sox rookie pitcher Matt Barnes was drafted as a starter, he has made 11 relief appearances in his brief Major League career, which started in 2014. Barnes has yet to start a big league game, and he may wind up being a reliever long-term for the Red Sox. But Barnes would be just fine with that.

“Right now, I’m not sure about (starting) because I’ve been doing one thing and I’m satisfied with what I’m doing right now,” said Barnes, per the Boston Herald. “I’m available to do anything and I’ll do anything the team needs me to do.”

Barnes, who was drafted 19th overall in 2011, is 2-0 and has allowed just one earned run in six appearances this year. And though he is currently blocked by Koji Uehara as a potential closer, manager John Farrell hasn't shied away from using Barnes as a late-inning option out of the bullpen.

“We brought him into high-leverage situations and there’s a reason we brought him into those situations," Farrell said. "Late in the game, you are looking at guy who can ideally control the running game and he’s got the ability to get a strikeout.”

Red Sox's Koji Uehara earns eighth save Thursday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Red Sox closer Koji Uehara picked up his eighth save on Thursday, delivering a 1-2-3 ninth inning to finish off his team's 2-1 win over the Mariners.

The Red Sox were able to take the lead in the top of the ninth inning before calling on Uehara, who didn't record a strikeout but still managed to breeze through the inning. The closer owns a 1.64 ERA and 13:2 K:BB ratio in 11 innings.

Red Sox closer Koji Uehara racking up saves with his splitter
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Red Sox closer Koji Uehara seems to be living and dying by his splitfingered fastball so far in 2015. Uehara suffered a hamstring injury during spring training and missed the week of the regular season. Since his return, he hasn't been throwing very many four-seam fastballs.

Uehara recorded his seventh save of the season on Wednesday, walking one and striking out one in a scoreless inning in Oakland. In that outing alone, he threw 10 splitters and three four-seamers, according to the Providence Journal.

Of the 151 pitches the 40-year-old right-hander has thrown this season, 110 have been splitters while just 39 have been straight fastballs. But regardless of the pitch selection, Uehara has gotten the job done. He's allowed two earned runs this season, both coming in one outing on April 24.

"You can tell what opposing hitters are trying to do, and he’s reading that as well,” maanger John Farrell said after Wednesday’s game. “They’re going in looking soft at times and, regardless of the velocity, he’s still able to get off the bat head with some fastballs. You look at the numbers, and you can’t deny them, despite some thought that his stuff is maybe not as crisp as it was a year ago.”
