Nationals pitcher Tanner Roark to be used out of the bullpen
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Nationals pitcher Tanner Roark will be used out of the bullpen this season in Washington, reports MASNSports.com.

Manager Matt Williams anticipates using Roark in multiple roles out of the bullpen now that Washington has a full starting rotation.

"It depends on the day," Williams said. "It depends on where we're at. One day, he could be the long guy. If, god forbid, one of the guys gets hit in the shin and can't go, he can certainly fill in in that role. He can come in and pick up an inning and go the next and plus that if we need him to do that.

"That's a luxury to have, certainly, with a guy that has experience going long. And he's got the ability to pitch at the same time, so can we get him in the seventh to get out of an inning when we need to do that, sure. He has the ability to do that."

Nationals P Tanner Roark could be use in multiple roles
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com

Nationals pitcher Tanner Roark could be the odd man out in Washington's five-man rotation this season. But that doesn't mean he won't be an asset to the Nationals in multiple roles.

Via CSN Washington, manager Matt Williams said Roark could be used for more roles than just as a long reliever.

Roark was the fifth man in the rotation a season ago for the Nationals. Max Scherzer's addition will likely send him to the bullpen.

In 2014, Roark went 15-10 with a 2.85 ERA.

Nationals' Williams on Tanner Roark: 'He's preparing to start'
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

There is a lot of speculation brewing about what the Nationals will do now that they have six starting pitchers but only five rotation spots. The popular belief is that if they don't trade a pitcher, then Tanner Roark is headed to the bullpen.

But it appears it might be too early to assume Roark will be bumped out of the rotation.

"He's preparing to start," Nationals manager Matt Williams said Wednesday, per MASNsports.com.

The 28-year-old right-hander Roark went 15-10 with a 2.85 ERA in 31 starts last season. Roark told The Washington Post on Tuesday that he would be OK with a move to the bullpen. With the addition of Max Scherzer, the Nationals rotation features Roark, Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez, Doug Fister and Jordan Zimmermann.

“When you sign a caliber guy like Scherzer and me being the fifth guy last year -- and I hope everybody stays, which would be great -- it’s just out of my hands,” Roark said. “I’d think I’d be the odd man out unfortunately. It is what it is. I’m glad to be on the team and helping out the team as best as I can. If I get moved to the bullpen, I’ve done it before and I know I can do it."

Nationals SP Tanner Roark OK with move to bullpen
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Nationals starting pitcher Tanner Roark had a pretty good season in 2014 -- his first full year in a major-league rotation. The 28-year-old right-hander went 15-10 with a 2.85 ERA in 31 starts.

Roark's numbers are good enough to keep him in the rotation of most major-league teams, but in Washington he might be the odd man out heading into 2015. That's because the Nationals have agreed to terms with free agent Max Scherzer, so if the Nationals don't trade a starter before the season, then Roark could be headed to the bullpen.

“When you sign a caliber guy like Scherzer and me being the fifth guy last year -- and I hope everybody stays, which would be great -- it’s just out of my hands,” Roark told The Washington Post by telephone on Tuesday morning. “It’s what everybody else wants to do and establish the Nationals even more. I’m just here to help out the best I can and do the best I can.

“I’d think I’d be the odd man out unfortunately. It is what it is. I’m glad to be on the team and helping out the team as best as I can. If I get moved to the bullpen, I’ve done it before and I know I can do it. I have confidence in my stuff and my ability. We’re playing each year to win a World Series. If I have to get moved to the bullpen for us to win a World Series, I’m fine with that. If that’s what it comes down to, so be it.”

Nationals' Tanner Roark surrenderes go-ahead HR in Game 2
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Nationals relief pitcher Tanner Roark coughed up the go-ahead run in Saturday's marathon defeat to the Giants in Game 2 of the NLDS.

Roark entered the game in the 17th inning and retired the side in order. The team kept the right-hander in the game for another inning and he gave up a solo home run to Brandon Belt to lead off the frame. He was charged with the loss after allowing one run on one hit and no walks while striking out three over two innings of a 2-1 defeat in 18 innings, the longest game in postseason history (6:23).
