Nationals SP Doug Fister gives up two HRs in spring start Monday
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Nationals starting pitcher Doug Fister had his second straight rough outing during Monday's spring game against the Yankees. Fister was charged with four runs on seven hits, while striking out four in 4 1/3 innings.

Fister gave up a two-run homer to Brian McCann in the third inning and a solo home run to Chris Young in the fifth inning.

The veteran right-hander has allowed six runs on 13 hits in his last two starts (8 1/3 innings). His ERA has gone from 2.08 to 4.97 in that span. He's given up three home runs in 12 2/3 innings this spring.

Nationals may roll with same spring rotation to start the season
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Nationals manager Matt Williams has yet to decide who his Opening Day starter will be, but CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman suggests he'll keep his "ridiculously stacked pitching rotation" the way he has during spring straining, with former Cy Young winner Max Scherzer the likely choice for the first game of the season.

The Nationals have rolled with Scherzer followed by Jordan Zimmermann, Stephen Strasburg, Doug Fister and Gio Gonzalez this spring.

Nationals' Doug Fister allows two runs in four innings vs. Marlins
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Nationals pitcher Doug Fister made his third start of the spring Wednesday, giving up two earned runs on six hits in four innings while striking out one in his team's 5-4 loss to the Marlins.

Fister stranded a runner in scoring position in the first after a two-out double but saw runs come home in the second and third innings. He was able to induce three ground balls for a 1-2-3 fourth inning to close out his outing.

"I know that if I can command my sinker and make sure that I have that under control, everything else will fall into place," Fister said after the outing, per the Associated Press. "That's just something I need to work on right now."

Fister has delivered a 3.24 ERA and 3:2 K:BB ratio in 8 1/3 innings this spring.

Nationals manager Matt Williams still weighing options for opener
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Nationals manager Matt Williams has not decided on who his Opening Day starter will be, noting that all five of his pitchers -- Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann, Max Scherzer, Doug Fister and Gio Gonzalez -- deserve a chance, per MLB.com.

"A lot goes into it," Williams said. "There's matchups. There is health in the spring. If anybody is a little bit cranky, we want to make sure we back off in that regard. There are three off-days leading up to the regular season. So if we have a hiccup here or there with anybody -- we saw that with Doug last year. … All those things go into it. Track record goes into, knowledge of the [the opponents].

"How they line up is irrelevant when you get past the first [turn through the] rotation anyway," Williams said. "But it's an honor for the guy that's gets chosen [for the Opening Day] start. Everybody wants to get off on the right foot in your first game -- great momentum and all those wonderful things. But if you don't win that first game, it doesn't mean you are dead. You go to the next one."

Nationals P Doug Fister focused on season, not free agency
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com

Though Nationals pitcher Doug Fister is entering a contract year, he maintained Thursday that he's focused solely on his upcoming season with Washington.

“I’m wearing this jersey right now, and that’s the most important thing,” Fister said, via CSN Washington. “I’m a National through-and-through right now. If it looks in the future that I can stay here, great. If not, I’ve got to make sure I get my job done and be a part of the team that I’m a part of.”

Fister and the Nationals avoided arbitration after agreeing to a one-year, $11.4 million deal in January.

In 2014, Fister went 16-6 and posted a 2.41 ERA.
