Travis Wood falls to .500 with early struggles
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com

Cubs pitcher Travis Wood settled down from a rough first inning, but the damage was already done in a 4-2 loss to the Reds.

Wood was tagged for three runs in the first inning, as Jay Bruce followed up an RBI single by Brandon Phillips with a two-run shot. He would allow just one more unearned run while pitching into the sixth inning, but still dropped to .500 with the loss.

Wood was charged with three earned runs on eight hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings, while striking out five batters on 109 pitches. He fell to 7-7 with the loss, while his ERA rose slightly, to 4.64.

Wood is set to make one more start before the All-Star break, Sunday against the Braves.

Cubs waiting another day or two to finalize rotation
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Following the trade of pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel, Cubs manager Rick Renteria said he will likely make a decision about who replaces them in the rotation on Monday or Tuesday, per MLB.com.

For now, the rotation aligns with Edwin Jackson starting Monday at Cincinnati, and he will be followed by Travis Wood and Tsuyoshi Wada during a doubleheader Tuesday. One candidate to join the rotation is Dallas Beeler, who allowed one unearned run over six innings in his lone start for Chicago June 28 against the Nationals.

"There's nothing that says they can't come in here and perform and help us win ballgames," Renteria said of promoting pitchers from the minors. "We're really hopeful that the guys that we have within the system will be able to come in and hopefully find a sense of comfort within that clubhouse and when they go out to the hill. Obviously, there's some nervousness that comes with the new area, the new arena. But usually those guys are able to adjust and perform."

Travis Wood falters late in no-decision
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com

Cubs starter Travis Wood struggled with his control Thursday, but still managed to toss a quality start in a 5-3 win over the Nationals.

Wood didn't get the win in the outing, as he struggled late and had to be helped out by the offense. He allowed three runs in the no-decision, as he scattered seven hits and five walks over 6 2/3 innings of work. He struck out four on 98 pitches before being removed.

Wood remains 7-6 through 16 starts, while his ERA fell slightly, to 4.52. He is set to take the mound next Wednesday in Boston.
