Angels' Grant Green starting at second base Saturday
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

The Angels will start Grant Green at second base Saturday, giving Johnny Giavotella just his second day off of the season, the team announced.

Green, who was called up by Los Angeles Friday, lost out on the position battle in spring training to Giavotella and is hitting .328 with four doubles and three triples in 61 at-bats so far this season for Triple-A.

Also in the starting lineup Saturday is Matt Joyce and Drew Butera, giving Collin Cowgill and Chris Iannetta the day off. The Angels are currently the favorites Saturday (-160) against the Rangers.

Angels recall Grant Green, option Nick Tropeano to minors
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com

The Angels called up infielder Grant Green and demoted pitcher Nick Tropeano on Friday, the team announced.

“Grant Green is swinging the bat very well and could take some pressure off the guys in the middle and play left field,” manager Mike Scioscia said, per The Orange County Register.

Tropeano tossed six scoreless innings to pick up his first win of the season Thursday. Green failed to make the team out of spring training and has been playing in Triple-A.

Angels' Green surprised he is playing multiple positions this spring
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

While Grant Green is still in the mix for the starting job at second base for the Angels, he has actually seen more time this spring in left field (24 innings), per The Orange County Register. He has also played 14 innings at shortstop, nine at third base and six at first base to go along with 19 innings at second base.

“It’s definitely surprising,” Green said of the way he’s been used. “I thought it would be a lot more innings (at second), but there is a reason why they are doing what they are doing. Hopefully it works out best for me and this club.”

Manager Mike Scioscia said Green is still in the running to "win some at-bats at second base," but added the team is trying to get him acclimated to other positions.

"Versatility never hurt any player. It could help him," Scioscia said.

Angels' Scioscia weighing second-base options
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Angels manager Mike Scioscia is weighing how much emphasis to put on spring-training performance as he decides how to approach the second-base position this season, MLB.com reports.

"A lot of it is to see what the best fit is for your group of guys, what your lineup needs are," Scioscia said. "There's an absolute to people winning jobs at spring training. Probably not at the analysis you're looking at -- 'Oh, he hit .340 in spring training' -- but there are a lot of things we're looking at as to how a guy fits in our lineup. You can make the team in spring, for sure, with the things that you show."

Scioscia hasn't ruled out the option of using multiple players at the position as the situation dictates.

"That's one of the options," he said. "There are guys that have the ability to go out there and do what we need to do on the defensive end and the offensive end, and we'll see who emerges and who gives us the best look."

Josh Rutledge highlights a second-base competition that also includes Grant Green, Johnny Giavotella and Taylor Featherston.
