Diamondbacks option pitchers Nuno, Ray, Burgos to minors
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

The Diamondbacks have optioned pitchers Vidal Nuno and Robbie Ray to Triple-A Reno as well as Enrique Burgos to Double-A Mobile, the team announced Saturday.

Arizona also reassigned Blake Lalli to their minor league camp. Nuno and Ray were competing for roles in the bullpen. Nuno was also scratched from his scheduled start Saturday. He posted a 8.10 ERA with eight strikeouts in four appearances this spring.

Ray posted a 6.35 ERA with 16 strikeouts and nine walks in six appearances.

Diamondbacks postpone decision on Gerald Laird
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

The Diamondbacks signed Gerald Laird to a five-day contract extension, which keeps him in camp with the team through Sunday.

Laird is in camp as a non-roster player, and his original contract had an out that he could exercise on Tuesday if he wasn't going to make the team's roster.

Laird is competing against Blake Lalli and Jordan Pacheco for the D-Backs' backup catcher spot.

Blake Lalli battling for backup catcher spot with Diamondbacks
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

The Diamondbacks aren't sure if they're keeping two catchers or three, and the only certainty is that Tuffy Gosewisch is starting.

Entering the final week of spring training, Blake Lalli is battling Gerald Laird and Jordan Pacheco for a roster spot.

"You just keep playing and try not to look into things, because it's impossible," Lalli said per MLB.com's Steve Gilbert. "I feel like if you do your job on the field, that's all you can do for sure. I know it sounds cliche, but it's true. I try not to pay attention to decisions that aren't mine. ... You can look around and see and kind of figure you're in it."

Hale: Gosewisch, Laird leading D-Backs catcher competition
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale spoke about the team's catcher competition Thursday, proclaiming Tuffy Gosewisch and Gerald Laird as the current leaders, MLB.com reports.

"Tuffy, to me, is running with it, and so is Gerald," Hale said. "I would say they're the two guys that are leading the pack. We haven't decided anything yet."

One of the reasons Laird signed with the Diamondbacks was a legitimate chance to win a roster spot, and he's established himself as a viable option for the team.

"He has just come in and done everything we've asked," Hale said. "What's impressed me is his catching. He's done a good job handling our staff, and he's had some really good at-bats. He looks fresh."

Blake Lalli or Jordan Pacheco may also be able to stick on the roster as well as a third catcher, due to their ability to play other positions.

Eight catchers vying for Diamondbacks' job
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

Eight catchers are in Major League camp with the Diamondbacks, and manager Chip Hale said that any combination of them could make the final roster.

24-year-old Peter O'Brien is a former second-round draft pick of the Yankees, who was dealt to the D-Backs last season. He's one of the top prospects in the organization and will get extensive playing time, either at the Major League level or in the minors until he's ready to take the starting job on the big club.

35-year-old Gerald Laird is a non-roster invitee. He'll likely serve as a backup if he makes the roster.

"We know what Gerald can do," Hale told Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. "We just need to make sure that he's ready. If and when he makes the team, he'll have to catch. How much can he catch for us? We'll have to figure that out."

Tuffy Gosewisch has the most experience with the team and is likely to take one of the roster spots.

Rule V pick Oscar Hernandez needs to make the big club or be returned to the Rays. Hale praised his defense. ""He's really looked good behind the plate," Hale said. "He kind of makes it hard on the coaches and the manager because every ball he catches looks like a strike. ... He's got great hands back there and he blocks it."

Jordan Pacheco could make the squad based on his versatility at other positions.

Blake Lalli , Matt Pagnozzi and Mark Thomas will have a tough time beating out the five players ahead of them on the depth chart.
