Melville had been a back-end rotation option, but never made it past the fourth inning and surrendered 11 earned runs on 16 hits in his first nine innings of the year. He ultimately fell victim to a pitching staff shuffle in Cincinnati, and to get another shot in the big leagues, he'll have to improve his command significantly and start missing more bats.
Melville has been awful for Cincinnati since the beginning of the season, posting an 11.00 ERA and 2.78 WHIP through nine innings. After struggling in his first couple of starts, it appeared that Dan Straily has taken his spot in the rotation, bumping Melville first to the bullpen and now off the 25-man roster entirely. Melville will now focus on getting his game back on track with Triple-A Toledo.
Tim Melville has seemingly been replaced in the Cincinnati Reds ' rotation, as Dan Straily has been tabbed to start Monday's series opener against the Rockies, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Melville has managed just four and three innings in his pair of starts this season, which have resulted in seven earned runs on 11 hits and seven walks to go with seven strikeouts. Considering the elevated WHIP (2.571), he likely has his work cut out for him in his quest to earn another nod.
Tim Melville (0-1) allowed seven runs, six of which were earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out two over three innings, taking the loss Friday at the Cardinals.
Melville gave up a pair of three-run bombs to Matt Holliday and Aledmys Diaz which led to his early exit. After two starts, he now has allowed 18 baserunners over seven innings of work. Once the Cincinnati Reds start getting pitchers back from the disabled list, he'll likely be removed from the rotation. But for now, his next start has yet to be determined.
Tim Melville will get a second start Friday against the Cardinals.
Melville managed to avoid major damage Sunday against the Padres, but this start presents a difficult challenge. Anthony DeSclafani has started to make good progress, so Melville might not start again after Friday.
