Nationals' Harper in better shape, hoping to play smarter
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper has reported to camp in better shape, according to The Washington Post

Harper lost weight during the offseason, reporting to camp at 204 pounds. He was able to work on his entire body during the winter, which he couldn't do last season due to a knee injury. Manager Matt Williams was impressed, saying Harper is in "fantastic shape."

On top of that, Harper said he's focused on playing smarter in the field in order to avoid an injury. Harper missed a large chunk of the 2013 season after running into the outfield wall, and it seems he'll do a better job of being more careful this year.

The 22-year-old hit .273/.344/.423 over 352 at-bats last season.

Williams: Nationals' Bryce Harper will likely hit in middle of lineup
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

When asked if he'll need outfielder Bryce Harper to carry more of the load in 2015, Nationals manager Matt Williams told reporters "it's safe to say he'll most likely hit somewhere in the middle of our lineup," per Comcast SportsNet Washington on Wednesday.

Harper, 22, was primarily the No. 6 hitter last season for the Nationals. He has played
77 career games at the No. 3 spot, 20 at cleanup and 13 at the No. 5 spot. Last season, he hit .273/.344/.423 with 13 homers and 32 RBI over 352 at-bats. He has appeared in only 218 games over the past two seasons due to an assortment of injury issues.

Nats' Harper nets two-year, $7.5M deal, avoids grievance hearing
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

The Nationals and outfielder Bryce Harper avoided a grievance hearing regarding his 2015 salary by agreeing to a two-year deal, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

The two sides were scheduled to have a grievance hearing Tuesday before coming to terms on a two-year, $7.5 million contract, sources told Heyman. Harper will make $2.5 million in 2015 and $5 million in 2016.

Harper was set to make $1.5 million in 2015 due to the contract he signed as a first-round pick in 2010. Had he been eligible for arbitration, he would have likely made about $2.5 million, according to The Washington Post. Harper and his agent, Scott Boras, believed Harper had the right to opt out of his deal and enter arbitration.

Nationals to swap Jayson Werth, Bryce Harper in the field
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

The Nationals will adjust their defensive alignment in 2015, according to The Washington Post

Bryce Harper is expected to take over in right field, while Jayson Werth moves to left. The move should allow the club to get better use of Harper's arm. Harper is also expected to take on a bigger role in the lineup. He will likely hit somewhere between the second and fourth spot in the lineup, according to manager Matt Williams. Last season, Harper was mostly used as the team's sixth hitter.

Bryce Harper homers again in Game 4 elimination loss
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper went 2 for 3 with a walk, a double, a home run and two RBI Tuesday but his team couldn't stave off postseason elimination, falling to the Giants 3-2 to end the NLDS on the wrong side of a 3-1 series loss.

Harper went 0 for 7 in the 18-inning Game 2 marathon but has been outstanding otherwise, going 5 for 10 with three home runs and four RBI. He put the Nationals on the board Tuesday with a fifth-inning RBI double then tied the game at 2-2 with a seventh-inning solo home run, but his heroics were not enough to send the series to a fifth game.
