Defense going to be key in Brewers' 1B competiton
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke hinted Mark Reynolds and Lyle Overbay could have "an edge" over Juan Francisco and Hunter Morris at first base because of their defensive skills in the field, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

"Obviously, everybody isn't going to make our team among the first basemen," Roenicke said. "With Overbay and Reynolds, we know from their history what we're getting from them. We know that Juan Francisco has power and is going to hit a lot of home runs if he's the guy. The other guys, they are younger. Hunter Morris struggled a little bit in Triple-A last year but figured it out in the second half, which I really liked. So, we'll see.

"If one of the younger guys steps up, then things change. But going into spring training we do feel we have a veteran presence there. Defense also matters to me a lot there. If we think we're better off defensively with the two veterans, that gives them an edge."

Brewers might use internal options to fill first-base void
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

With spring training getting closer and the free-agent market at first base drying up, the Brewers might have to use internal options to fill the void at first base, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The options would include Juan Francisco and prospect Hunter Morris.

"We did get 21 homers and knocked in 86 runs from that position (in 2013)," said general manager Doug Melvin, who added the .629 OPS of his first basemen was historically low. "But the defense has to improve and you'd like to see a better on-base percentage (than .259).

"We've gone through the list. There just aren't available guys. Texas, at this point, is not willing to talk about (Mitch) Moreland. Seattle is not interested in moving their guys. So, there aren't a lot of choices.

"The Packers went 20 years between Bart Starr and finding Brett Favre. Hopefully, we don't go 20 years trying to find a replacement for Prince Fielder (who left after the 2011 season as a free agent). It might be a situation where we mix and match, or trial and error."
