Rays' Brad Boxberger: Notches win in extra-inning affair
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Boxberger (2-0) fired a scoreless ninth inning in Friday's 2-1 extra-inning victory over the Angels.

Boxberger looked sharp once again in what was his fifth straight scoreless effort since making his season debut on June 30. The 29-year-old right-hander showed excellent control over his one frame, firing eight of his 12 pitches for strikes. Manager Kevin Cash appears to have thorough confidence that his former closer is at full health, as he deployed him in a considerably high-leverage scenario Friday.

Rays' Brad Boxberger: Records first victory Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Boxberger (1-0) fired a scoreless eighth inning in Sunday's 5-3 win over the Red Sox, issuing two walks and recording a strikeout.

Boxberger wasn't as sharp as he'd been in his first three outings, but was able to wiggle out of trouble after issuing a pair of free passes by mowing down Christian Vazquez. The 29-year-old then nabbed his first victory of the season courtesy of Brad Miller's two-run home run in the home half of the frame, and he's now rung up seven strikeouts over his first four innings of 2017. Boxberger was notably deployed as a set-up option Sunday, his first instance of eighth-inning work over his first four appearances. Given his solid efforts thus far -- as well as his extensive experience in high-leverage scenarios -- this could well be the role that Boxberger opens the second half of the season in.

Rays' Brad Boxberger: Impressive once again Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Boxberger logged his second hold in Thursday's 4-1 win over the Red Sox, recording two strikeouts over a scoreless inning.

Making his second appearance in the last three days, Boxberger was dominant once again, firing nine of his 13 pitches for strikes and ringing up multiple strikeouts for the second time in his trio of 2017 outings. The former closer has yet to allow a hit over his three innings, and manager Kevin Cash hasn't hesitated to afford him a normal workload now that Boxberger is finally healthy.

Rays' Brad Boxberger: First hold of season Tuesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Boxberger notched his first hold of the season in Tuesday's 6-5 win over the Cubs, firing a scoreless inning while allowing a walk and recording a strikeout.

So far, so good for the 29-year-old former closer, who finally made his 2017 debut last Friday against the Orioles. Boxberger also fired a scoreless inning in that contest, striking out the side on 13 pitches. He disposed of the potent trio of Anthony Rizzo, Ben Zobrist and Ian Happ after giving up a leadoff walk to Kris Bryant on Tuesday, so he's certainly proving himself against a quality hitters thus far. If the veteran right-hander can continue turning in efforts of similar caliber, the Rays will potentially have one of the stronger late-inning 1-2 punches in baseball in the form of Boxberger and closer Alex Colome.

Rays' Brad Boxberger: Dominant in first outing of 2017
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Boxberger excelled in his 2017 debut, striking out the side in his only inning of work in Friday's 6-4 extra-inning win over the Orioles.

The veteran reliever couldn't have dialed up a better performance for his first appearance of 2017, firing 10 of his 13 pitches for strikes while mowing down Ruben Tejeda, Joey Rickard and Seth Smith. If Boxberger can provide something close to this caliber of effort on a regular basis, it will naturally go a long way toward stabilizing what has at times been a shaky seventh-and-eighth-inning bullpen situation for the Rays. Furthermore, it certainly isn't out of the realm of possibility for the former closer to see some save chances on days when Alex Colome is unavailable.
