| Guillen opts for retirement: After 14 seasons in the major leagues, Seattle second baseman Carlos Guillen announced his retirement on Tuesday, according to the team. Guillen, a three-time All-Star, made his big-league debut with the Mariners in 1998. He spent parts of six seasons with Seattle before joining Detroit in 2004 and hitting at least .318 in three straight seasons. He carried a .285 batting average for his career with 124 homers and 660 RBI. "It’s hard because you only make this decision one time in your career and in your life," Guillen told MLB.com. | Guillen was hoping to land a bench spot with the Mariners this spring after signing a minor-league deal with the team during the offseason. But the 36-year-old missed several workouts because of a calf injury -- a common theme for Guillen, who was limited to just 28 games last year in his final season with the Tigers.
