The Twins optioned starting pitcher Pedro Hernandez to Triple-A Rochester Monday to clear a spot for reliever Caleb Thielbar. The Twins have an open date for a starting pitcher Friday at Detroit.

Hernandez allowed three earned runs on nine hits and a walk in 4 1/3 innings Sunday against the Red Sox. He is 2-1 with a 5.85 ERA through eight outings (six starts).

Twins pitcher Pedro Hernandez suffered his first loss of the season in Sunday's 5-1 defeat to the Red Sox.

Hernandez (2-1), who made his sixth start of the season, surrendered a solo home run to Will Middlebrooks in the second. He was charged with three runs and nine hits over 4 1/3 innings of work. He struck out two and walked one as he saw his ERA rise from 5.79 to 5.85.

Hernandez is scheduled to make his next start Friday at Detroit. He has a whopping 10.22 ERA in three starts away from Target Field.

Twins pitcher Pedro Hernandez posted a 13.50 ERA over his first two starts in May but was much improved on Monday night against the White Sox. He allowed three runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings in a 10-3 win.

The left-hander was tagged with a two-spot in the first before making it through his next four frames unscathed. Then in the sixth, he put the first two men on before Alex Rios drove in a run with a groundout.

Hernandez, who threw 84 pitches, also struck out four with no walks while earning his second win.

His next start is scheduled for Sunday against the Red Sox. When Hernandez faced Boston on May 8, he allowed six runs over just two innings of work.
