Athletics infielder Hiroyuki Nakajima is headed back to Japan, agreeing to a three-year, $12 million deal with Orix, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman. It includes a $4 million vesting option.
The Athletics signed Nakajima to a two-year, $6.5 million contract in December 2012, hoping he would emerge as their starting shortstop. However, Nakajima spent his two seasons in the United States playing in the minor leagues. He hit .267 with 10 home runs, 27 doubles, 69 RBI and 73 runs in 175 minor-league games.
The 32-year-old Nakajima played 11 seasons in Japan for Seibu before signing with the A's. He hit .302 with a .371 on-base percentage, .472 slugging percentage and .843 in 1,225 games for Seibu.
