The Athletics signed Nakajima to a two-year, $6.5 million contract in December 2012, hoping he would emerge as their starting shortstop. However, Nakajima spent his two seasons in the United States playing in the minor leagues. He hit .267 with 10 home runs, 27 doubles, 69 RBI and 73 runs in 175 minor-league games.
The 32-year-old Nakajima played 11 seasons in Japan for Seibu before signing with the A's. He hit .302 with a .371 on-base percentage, .472 slugging percentage and .843 in 1,225 games for Seibu.
Nakajima has been removed from the team's 40-man roster, and will begin the year in the minors. Nakajima looked like an impact signing in 2012, but failed to make an impact in the majors.
Nakajima hasn't contributed much since signing with the club in 2012. He'll try and work his way onto the major-league roster at some point this year.
Nakajima was one of the team's key free-agent signings in 2012, but has failed to make an impact in the majors. The fact that he's not in major-league camp shows how far he's fallen on the team's depth chart.
