  • Joey Rickard: Parts ways with San Francisco

The Giants declared Rickard (elbow) a free agent Sunday, Chris Hilburn-Trenkle of Baseball America reports. San Francisco initially outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento after he cleared waivers over the weekend, but the 29-year-old has apparently decided to test his luck on the open market rather than returning to the organization. The outfielder appeared in four contests for the Giants during the 60-game 2020 campaign before being ruled out for the season Aug. 31 with left elbow inflammation.

During 68 games with the Orioles and Giants last season, Rickard hit .226 with 14 runs and 10 RBI.

Rickard made the Giants' 60-man roster. The veteran outfielder was in camp on a minor-league deal prior to the shutdown. San Francisco doesn't have the most talented outfield depth chart, but Rickard lacks long-term upside or the potential to generate trade interest, so he should play sparingly.

Rickard was in the starting lineup against a southpaw, but he was removed once Kyle Freeland left the contest after just three innings. Mike Yastrzemski took over in left field and went 2-for-3 with a home run. Rickard has a couple more shots to start this weekend with the Dodgers scheduled to throw left-handed starters Saturday (Hyun-Jin Ryu) and Sunday (Rich Hill), but his pedestrian .226/.314/.360 slash line won't generate much buzz amongst fantasy owners.

The 28-year-old will wait in the minors for his next shot at the big leagues and shouldn't be counted on to produce much of note if and when he does arrive, with the difference in home park between Baltimore and San Francisco likely to take a further bite out of his already unimpressive numbers.
