Blue Jays starter Ramon Ortiz enjoyed plenty of run support during his start Wednesday night at home against the San Francisco Giants. Toronto scored 10 times over the first three innings and Ortiz left the game with an 11-1 lead.

He was able to cruise to victory for his first win of the year as he improved to 1-1 over three starts. Ortiz allowed just one earned run, coming on a Pablo Sandoval sacrifice fly in the first inning. Otherwise, the Giants could not score off him over 100 pitches. He gave up six hits and walked one with one strikeout.

Ortiz, 39, was a bit shaky in his first start of the season on April 17 against the White Sox. However, he started May 10 at Boston and allowed just one run over five innings in a loss. He's given up just two runs over his last 12 innings and has impressed manager John Gibbons.

The Toronto rotation has been hindered by injuries with J.A. Happ and Josh Johnson both on the shelf. Ricky Romero has been unable to find the strike zone consistently. Because of that, Gibbons must keep turning to Ortiz, MLB.com reports. His next start should come Monday or Tuesday against Tampa Bay.

"One thing about Ortiz is he competes; he's been around. He knows what this level of baseball is all about," Gibbons said. "He relies on hitting his spots and getting a lot of ground balls like he did the other day. If he does that, he should be effective."

With Blue Jays pitcher Brandon Morrow (back) scratched from his scheduled start, the team will use veteran Ramon Ortiz again in his place Wednesday against San Francisco, Sportsnet reports. Ortiz suffered the loss in his first outing with Toronto last Friday -- his first start since July 5, 2011 -- when he walked five batters over five innings at Boston.

Ortiz, who had not faced the Red Sox since 2004, turned in a decent performance as he allowed a run to score on a fielder's choice in the second for his only damage of the night. He was charged with one run and four hits over five innings of work in a 5-0 defeat. He walked five and struck out one in 96 pitches, 51 strikes.

Ortiz is scheduled to make his second start Wednesday at home against San Francisco. He has not faced the Giants since 2010.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said pitcher Ramon Ortiz, who was recalled Thursday from Triple-A Buffalo, will start Friday at Boston, if he's not needed Thursday against the Rays, according to Sportsnet. The Blue Jays need a starter Friday since Brandon Morrow is being bumped to Sunday as he's dealing with back and neck spams.

The Blue Jays recalled pitcher Ramon Ortiz from Triple-A Buffalo Thursday. Ortiz was 2-0 with a 2.18 ERA and .203 opponents' batting average in four appearances (three starts) for Buffalo.

Ortiz allowed two runs in eight innings in his last start Sunday for Buffalo. He could be inserted into the rotation with J.A. Happ on the disabled list and Ricky Romero optioned to Buffalo Thursday. Ortiz made his only appearance for Toronto this season in relief.
